US University Requirements
The United States application process is famous for one thing: holistic review. Unlike almost every other country, your grades and test scores are not the only things that matter. This means your personal essays, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation are critically important, in addition to your academics. The process is complex, personal, and lengthy.
Find the Application Portal:
The Common Application ("Common App"): This is the main portal used by over 1,000 universities. You fill out one main application and set of essays and submit it to multiple schools.
The Coalition Application (Skoir): A smaller alternative to the Common App.
University-Specific Portals: Some large public university systems have their own portals (e.g., the University of California system, University of Texas).
Academic Records: Your 4-year high school transcript and GPA.
Test Scores: TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo. SAT/ACT scores are highly appreciated but some don't use SAT .
The "Essays" (Plural and Critical):
Letters of Recommendation (LORs): 2-3 formal letters from your teachers and counselor.
Extracurricular Activities List: A detailed list of your activities, jobs, clubs, sports, and family responsibilities. This is a very important part of the application.
Financial Documents: The CSS Profile and other forms if you are applying for aid.
