Requirements of Universities in the UAE

The UAE has a highly decentralized, private, market-based system. There is no central application portal. The application process depends entirely on the type of university you are applying to.

The system is split into two main tracks:

  1. Federal/Public Universities: (e.g., UAE University, Zayed University). These are for Emirati nationals, but some accept international students.

  2. Private/Branch Campuses: (e.g., NYU Abu Dhabi, Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, Heriot-Watt Dubai, University of Birmingham Dubai). This is the primary route for international students.

The language of instruction is almost exclusively English.

This varies 100% by university.

For US Branch Campuses (e.g., NYU Abu Dhabi):

  • The Common Application: This is your application.

  • Essays: The main Common App essay + supplemental "Why Us?" essays. (Holistic).

  • Letters of Recommendation: Required.

  • Test Scores: SAT/ACT are often optional but encouraged.

For UK/Australian Branches (e.g., Birmingham, Heriot-Watt):

  • Academic Records: High school transcripts (IB, A-Levels, APs).

  • Personal Statement: A UK-style academic personal statement is often required.

For Federal Universities (e.g., UAE University):

  • Academic Records: High school diploma, which must be officially attested/legalized.

Test Scores: EmSAT (Emirates Standardized Test) scores may be required.
