Requirements of Indonesian Universities

International Track:

The system for international students is decentralized and application-based. You apply directly to the specific "International Undergraduate Program" (IUP) or "Kelas Khusus Internasional" (KKI) at each top university (like Universitas Indonesia, UGM, or ITB). Admission is a holistic screening, often followed by a university-run test or interview.

  • Diploma and transcripts (often must be certified by the Indonesian Embassy in your home country).

  • Exam Entrance: Your University Entrance Test Score. (Most important. This is the key academic filter. It could be the university's own test, like UGM's GMST or UI's SIMAK KKI, or standardized tests like the SAT/ACT, which are often accepted or recommended).

  • Language Proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS score.

  • Passport, health certificate, and financial statement.

  • Essay: A Motivation Letter or Personal Statement is often required.

National Track:

The system for national students applying to public universities (PTN) is highly centralized, competitive, and almost entirely metrics-based. It is managed by a national committee (SNPMB) and is split into three main pathways, or Jalur:

  1. SNBP (Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Prestasi): A national, invitation-only route based on high school grades and achievements.

  2. SNBT (Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Tes): The main national route, based entirely on a standardized test score.

  3. Seleksi Mandiri (Independent Selection): A "third-chance" route where you take a test run by the individual university.

  • Diploma (Ijazah) and High School Grades (Rapor).

  • Exam Entrance: Your UTBK score (for SNBT) or your Rapor grades (for SNBP). (Most important. For the SNBP pathway, your high school grades are the only factor. For the SNBT pathway, your UTBK—a single, national computerized test—is the only factor).

  • NISN (National Student Identification Number), KTP (National ID Card), KK (Family Card).

  • Essay: None. (The main national pathways, SNBP and SNBT, do not use essays, personal statements, or letters of recommendation. Admission is based purely on grades or test scores).
