Requirements of South African Universities

The South African application system is a dual process. You must (1) apply directly to each university and (2) apply separately to a national board to have your high school diploma certified.

  1. Academic Records: Your high school transcripts and (if available) your final diploma.

  2. NBT Results: If required by your program.

  3. Passport Copy

  4. English Language Certificate: (IELTS or TOEFL) unless your high school education was conducted in English.

  5. Motivation Letter: This is often required for competitive programs (e.g., medicine, law, fine arts). It is a formal, academic letter explaining your interest in the subject, your suitability, and your career goals.

  6. VISA

  7. Apply for Matriculation Exemption (The Critical Step):

  • You must apply to the Matriculation Board, which is part of Universities South Africa (USAf).

  • You will submit your high school transcripts and diploma to them. They will assess them and, if you meet the requirements, issue you a Certificate of Matriculation Exemption.

  • You cannot be fully accepted or register at any South African university without this exemption certificate.
